Everything in Hatchetfield seemed normal until people began singing... Then, they began dancing... And now, a musical pandemic is sweeping the entire city. It’s up to Paul (an average guy who doesn’t like musicals) and his friends to stop this musical apocalypse and fight for humanity’s future.
What do I hope to bring to this show?
My comic sensibilities are a bit darker and nihilistic, so usually a musical is not the clearest choice for me. When I found this show, I was taken aback and totally elated. As I watched it, and listened to it over and over again, all I could think about was how I would stage it, develop the connections between these characters, and bring this world and story to the stage.
This show is built for everything I love to do on stage: a clean show flow, ludicrous and well defined characters, catchy comedy with a dark edge, and built in audience engagement. I believe that, with this show, we can create something both memorable and engaging, and help perpetuate new contributions to the musical canon.
Why Do I want to do This show?
My history as a director has exclusively been with straight plays, mostly dramatic, but dipping into comedy occasionally. So, for me to venture out of my comfort zone, it would need to be something funny, exciting, and accessible. Luckily, this show is as accessible to me as a director as it is to an audience. The show is hilarious, meta, and a true blast. On a personal note, working on this project would provide both a fun and challenging opportunity for myself and the cast/crew.
In a time where new works are looking to be staged, and where audiences want to engage with new, off kilter productions, this one is a no-brainer. This will reach out to new audiences and old, bringing in young and older demographics to enjoy an evening of hilarious mayhem!
Who is this show for? AKA Why is it right for your company?
This show has a very large fanbase, of the musical itself and the creative team behind it. If you’re a company looking for a younger demographic, this is a slam dunk! Additionally, the show is very accessible and well rounded for other audiences as well! If you are looking for a darkly comedic musical, this will be an excellent addition to your season!
Also, if this production does well, Starkid has made two sequels, both in the same world and vein as this show! So the story can continue!
Heads up, however: this show is FIRMLY an adult, over 18+ show, due to language, violence, and suggestive situations. Something to consider!
